Introducing the All-New SkipTheQ Android App.

At Kalafong Hospital, we’ve long witnessed a challenge that too many patients silently endure, spending hours in queues to collect their chronic medication. For the elderly and those managing chronic conditions, these long waits are not only frustrating-they’re physically and emotionally draining.

This persistent reality compelled us to ask a critical question: What if patients could collect their medication in just 15 minutes, with dignity and ease?

That question laid the foundation for a transformational digital health initiative.

Today, we’re proud to officially launch the SkipTheQ Android App, a tool designed to reduce patient waiting times and streamline medication collection at Kalafong Hospital.

Understanding the Problem

Public hospital pharmacies in South Africa often face overwhelming demand. Limited staff and high patient volumes result in long queues and extended waiting times, especially for stable patients on chronic medication who require nothing more than a simple collection.

At Kalafong, our pharmacy team knew we had to act.

The Birth of SkipTheQ

SkipTheQ was first introduced in March 2024 as a web-based solution allowing patients to:

  • Book a time slot in advance
  • Collect medication quickly and efficiently
  • Avoid long queues and unnecessary delays

Our goal was clear: To ensure that collecting medication doesn’t mean sacrificing an entire day.

The platform quickly proved its value, with over 10,000 patients served in its first 13 months. Average waiting times dropped from over 3 hours to under 15 minutes.

Why We Developed an Android App

As usage of SkipTheQ grew, so did our understanding of patient behaviour. Web analytics revealed that:

  • 91% of users accessed SkipTheQ via mobile devices
  • 79% of those used Android phones

This insight was critical.

Patients, particularly those in vulnerable groups, are more familiar with mobile apps than navigating mobile websites. Apps are faster, more reliable, and easier to use repeatedly.

Even with a mobile-friendly website, limitations persisted:

  • No instant notifications or reminders
  • No easy app icon access
  • Higher drop-off rates due to browser timeouts or slow loading

That’s when we decided to build a dedicated Android app. One that would:

  • Offer a more seamless user experience
  • Integrate reminders and confirmations
  • Load quickly and work reliably on lower-end devices

And now, it’s here.

Introducing the SkipTheQ Android App

The app allows patients at Kalafong to:

  • Secure a time slot for chronic medication collection
  • Receive notifications and reminders to ensure they don’t miss their booking
  • View past and upcoming appointments all in one place

The interface is simple, intuitive, and designed for public sector patients.

A New Chapter for Kalafong Pharmacy

This app isn’t just a technical solution but part of a broader shift toward patient-centred care.

By embracing digital tools like SkipTheQ, we are:

  • Reducing congestion in waiting areas
  • Improving staff workflow and efficiency
  • Enhancing the patient experience

It’s a win for everyone.

Looking Ahead

The launch of the Android app is just the beginning. Plans are already underway to:

  • Expand SkipTheQ to other healthcare facilities
  • Develop an iOS version
  • Add features such as biometric logins, medication stock alerts, and integration with broader chronic care programs.

Our mission is simple: to restore dignity and efficiency to public sector healthcare, starting with the pharmacy.

Final Words

To every patient who has ever waited too long, and to every healthcare professional working to improve the system:

Thank you.

We built this app for you.

And we’re just getting started.

Let’s SkipTheQ. Together.
